Intended for students who have majored in a career and technology/vocational/technical program at a community college, university, junior college, or an accredited technical school, this program allows students to develop a program of study specific to their career and educational goals.

The RN-BSN Online Track is designed for the student who is enrolled in or graduated from a community college with a degree in nursing and will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN, or who has passed the NCLEX-RN, holds a current, unencumbered Texas license as a registered nurse and wishes to obtain the baccalaureate degree. Earning a baccalaureate degree will open more doors in an RN's nursing career, allowing for positions of leadership, enhanced career advancement opportunities, and the potential to pursue graduate education.
Health care administration is a multidisciplinary degree composed of courses from health, business, economics, management, and psychology. Students will learn to distinguish among the various roles in the health care services industry; analyze data and information for effective decision making; recognize the legal and ethical principles and responsibilities of health care organizations; strategically evaluate and improve performance in health care organizations; and demonstrate collaborative leadership and teamwork. Careers in Health Care Administration could include: Department or Division Coordinator in a hospital, Medical and Health Services Manager, Compensation and Benefits Manager for a health care organization, or Top-level Executive of a health care organization.
The Sociology BA and BS programs provide students with strong conceptual and methodological foundations, training in applied methods, and a wide range of elective course options. The sociology program at SHSU is one of the few sociology programs to offer an emphasis on training in applied methods. Students have a choice of a wide variety of electives covering a range of social issues and topics. The department also strongly encourages and supports undergraduate student research and collaborations with faculty members. SHSU sociology majors have the opportunity to regularly present their papers at regional and national conferences and publish their work in academic student journals. Career paths in Sociology could include: Non-profit advocacy, Market research and data analysis, Government, law, and court professions, Case management and child protective service, Private and public sector work in sales and supervision, Human resource management and public relations, and Education and teaching.
Communication studies—a social science similar to sociology and psychology—is the science of how communication affects our relationships with other people in a variety of contexts. Communication Studies is focused on human communication processes that can be generally classified into verbal and nonverbal. It deals with a variety of issues related to these processes, including the sharing of meaning, the encoding and decoding of messages, and the development of relationships using communication in a variety of contexts. Our degree prepares you for a variety of fields, including teaching at all levels, public advocacy and public relations, governmental relations, human relations, education, patient advocacy, motivational speaking, and website development and marketing.
A degree in English from Sam Houston State University can open the door to a number of career possibilities. Most professions and professional schools stress the need to read well, speak well, write well, and think critically. Class sizes are small, so that students may receive personal attention from faculty, have opportunities to interact with nationally-recognized writers, and have opportunities to publish and present papers at conferences and enter writing contests. English majors take a variety of courses in British, American, and World Literature. Although there are required course in American and British literature, the program is flexible enough that you can explore other courses like creative writing, technical communication, and special literary topics such as women in literature, African American literature, major authors, film and literature, and more.. Careers paths in English could include: Teaching, Publishing, Journalism, Law, Business Writing, Marketing, Web Design, Social Media/Entertainment, Public Service, or Non-Profit Administration.
A history degree prepares students to find, weigh, and interpret conflict evidence; to evaluate the merits of an argument; to advance original interpretations based on textual and non-textual evidence; to pose good questions of the past; to appreciate difference, change, and diversity; and to approach the present with humility, empathy, context, and understanding. The degree equips students with key skills necessary for a wide range of careers, including but not limited to: Education, Law and Legal Professions, Research and Institutional Analysis, Documentary Editing, Corporate Historian, Contract Historian, Archivist or Records Manager, or Curator or Museum Professional.
The Paralegal Studies Program prepares students to support attorneys by developing practical skills in legal research, document preparation, and case management. Combining legal theory with real-world experience, the program emphasizes ethics, procedural law, and effective communication. Graduates are equipped to enter the legal workforce or pursue further studies in law or related fields.

We have automatic acceptance for any freshman with an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher, regardless of ACT or SAT score. GPAs are based on a 4.0 scale. Any student with 12-17 transferable credit hours with a 2.5 or higher GPA or 18+ transferable credit hours with a 2.0 or higher GPA.
With Apply Texas, you can apply to any Texas public university or community college, and many private universities. To begin the application process, you will create an account on the ApplyTexas website. Once logged in to ApplyTexas, you will see a prompt to find the right application for you. You will answer a few questions and ApplyTexas will tell you which applications you will use to apply to college. Next, you can start your Core Questions. Core Questions allow you to answer questions one time and share your responses with all the schools you apply to. Finally, use the school search function to find and save the schools you wish to apply for. Make sure to find and select "Sam Houston State University." Answer SHSU's school specific questions and then you'll be ready to submit your application! Within 2 business days after submitting your application through Apply Texas, you'll receive an email to setup an SHSU Self Service Center (SSC) account. You will use your SSC to pay your application fee and track transcript status.
